Have you ever had food poisoning? It’s not fun. It’s easy to get food poisoning if you don’t follow proper food safety and handling practices. That’s why we have health departments that check our restaurants and businesses! As a business owner, it’s your job to meet public health and safety codes, especially proper food handling practices. If you don’t, you could risk your business!
So do you know what the rules are for avoiding food contamination? Here’s an excellent phrase to help you remember how to safely prepare, store and handle food: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill.
- Clean: Make sure that everything is clean. Keep your hands clean, and make sure your cooking utensils, tools, and surfaces are cleaned and sanitized. Wash produce before cutting it and remove any juices on raw meat with a paper towel. Sanitize surfaces that come into direct contact with raw meat.
- Separate: Keep your raw meat and fruit and veggies away from one another. Use separate knives, cutting boards, and surfaces for meat and produce. Thoroughly wash any utensils or tools that touch raw meat with hot soapy water after every use.
- Cook: Always cook your meats and food to the correct temperature. Follow cooking guidelines and use a meat thermometer!
- Chill: Cold foods should be kept cold, but warm foods are good at room temperature for no more than two hours. After two hours, cover your food in airtight containers or wraps and chill them in the refrigerator.
It’s easy to accidentally poison your food if you don’t follow proper food preparation and safety practices. Unfortunately, 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from food poisoning each year, and a lot of the time, food handling and cleaning methods are to blame. If you don’t want to make your guests or customers sick, you’re going to want to follow these guidelines!
You can keep your kitchen even cleaner with a Microshield 360 treatment, which is approved for food-grade surfaces. Microshield 360 is a great way to keep your counters and floors free from bacteria and germs between cleanings. This treatment is applied using electrostatic technology to ensure even surface distribution. Once the solution touches the surface, it forms an antimicrobial coating that lasts for up to a year and helps prevent bacteria growth. It’s a worthwhile investment, especially in the kitchen!
