There’s nothing more thrilling than renovating. It’s fun to watch an old space get transformed before your eyes. But there is one major problem you may forget about in your excitement to DIY –– the mess.
Renovating is a huge mess, and construction dust gets everywhere. Your contractor should take steps to prevent damage to the rest of your space, but you’re still going to find dust in all kinds of places after the contractor leaves.
If your business is undergoing a renovation, the mess needs to be cleaned up fast and properly. Hiring a professional company like ours to perform a deep clean is a great way to ensure your new space is sparkling clean and ready for customers.
These are a few of the areas we always recommend getting cleaned after a renovation.
- Your HVAC and air filter system. Construction dust gets everywhere, and it can be very hard on your air filters and HVAC. It’s best to get your system completely cleaned out and the air filters removed and cleaned.
- Any furniture that will be going in the new space. Unless you’re replacing all the furniture, you should wash anything that was around the construction work. Take it apart if you can, vacuum in all the nooks and crannies, and shampoo any fabrics. A thorough deep cleaning is necessary, especially when putting the furniture in a brand new space.
- Ledges, baseboards, and shelves. These areas are great for collecting dust. Here’s a secret trick to help you clean them, used dryer sheets. Dryer sheets that have been through the dryer once are amazing at picking up dust in small areas like baseboards and ledges. Start saving your dryer sheets now for dusting!
- Flooring. Unless you’ve just installed new flooring, your contractor should have taken steps to protect them, like drop cloths or plastic coverings. But even once those coverings get pulled up, you’ll still find dust and dirt beneath (and maybe a few scratches). Start by vacuuming up the dust using a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Then, use a dust mop to remove the last of the dust particles before mopping. Mopping up dust can scratch and ruin your floors, so it’s best to remove as much as you can. Make sure to remove everything from the room and clean beneath and behind all furniture. Dust collects everywhere!
- Electrical outlets. Please make sure to safely dust outlets and clean them before you plug in any electronics. Dust in outlets can be a fire hazard! If you can, swap out your old outlet and light switch covers for new ones.
Renovating your business or home is a great project, but it is messy. You won’t be able to enjoy your new space if it isn’t properly cleaned once the construction is finished. Remember to start from the top and work your way down in each room to spread dust around.
