On 9/11, Rick Rescorla was responsible for saving 2,700 employees of Morgan Stanley by ordering an evacuation. Rescorla, the vice president of corporate security, was present during the first terrorist attack by a truck bomb on the World Trade Center in 1993. He realized that a similar attack could happen again in the future and did everything he could to keep his employees safe. For years Resccorla urged Morgan Stanley to move their headquarters out of the building, but they refused. So instead, he diligently held fire and evacuation drills every three months. His insistence paid off, and when the 9/11 attacks occurred, he ordered an evacuation and saved the lives of 2,700 people. Tragically, Rescorla lost his life that day.
Businesses are responsible for the safety of their employees and customers in an emergency. It’s up to business owners to diligently practice evacuation and fire drills, just as Rescorla urged his company to do.
