Winter is here, and with the colder weather comes snow, sleet, and all the trappings that make us want to stay inside, curled up with hot cocoa and a warm blanket. But cleaning chores still need to be done, even when the temperature dips. One cleaning chore often overlooked during the winter months is window cleaning, but it is still very important it gets done! Here’s why.
Windows actually may get dirtier in the winter than in the summer. Snow sleet will cover your windows and leave them a streaky mess. But there’s one more culprit that can make your windows especially dirty during the winter – road salt.
If your home or business is near a roadway, salt spray from the road will cover your windows. Not only will this spray make your windows dirty faster, but it’s also more likely to damage your windows. Microscopic scratches and dents may form from the debris, which can ruin your windows, especially if treated with UV covering or a tint. So here are some tips that can help make the process easier in the colder months.
- Wait until it’s above freezing. In the summer, we advise people to clean their windows on a slightly overcast day so they don’t dry too quickly and become streaky. In the winter, our advice is the opposite. You must wait to tackle this job until it’s above-freezing and sunny. This way, you wouldn’t have to worry about your cleaning solution freezing to the windows.
- Be careful with your ladder. Placing a ladder for window cleaning when there is snow and ice on the ground is a tricky process. Take extra care to ensure your ladder is securely anchored, and have someone watch it while climbing up so you stay safe!
- Make sure your cleaning solution doesn’t freeze. When the temperatures dip, you need to use a warmer window cleaning solution so it doesn’t freeze to the windows. A simple solution of soapy water and rubbing alcohol works great for winter window cleaning!
- Protect your hands. Your regular rubber cleaning gloves aren’t going to work when you’re cleaning your windows outside in the winter. Your hands will get too cold, putting you at risk of developing frostbite. We recommend sizing up your cleaning gloves so you can layer them over a thin pair of winter gloves and keep your hands warm.
- Keep lots of towels on hand. Your cleaning towels will inevitably start to freeze up faster, even if you’re doing this job on a day when the temperature is above freezing. So make sure to keep some extra towels on hand to switch out to avoid streaky windows.
