Your business’s curb appeal is a big selling point for customers. Customers will expect that your business landscaping is neat, free of garbage and debris, and attractively arranged. Those qualities will signal to your customers that your business is clean and inviting. Unfortunately, taking care of your property’s landscaping is a big job, and there’s one thing that can ruin all your hard work – weeds.
Here in Utah, we have a lot of weeds. You can even get a fine for some weeds if you don’t remove them fast enough. One noxious weed, myrtle spurge, loves the climate here in Utah. Officially classified as invasive, this poisonous weed thrives on little water and threatens grass and other plants. The state is taking steps to eradicate the weed in public spaces, and notifying homeowners and business owners when they find it. Still, it’s up to individual property owners to remove it. If they don’t, they may face a daily fine of $100!
Of course, myrtle spurge isn’t the only weed you have to contend with on your property. Here are a few more you should watch out for:
- Black Medic: This weed looks like clover, but its leaves are jagged, and its flowers are yellow. It grows during the summer and does well in compact soil areas, like between sidewalk cracks or in parking lots. However, it will creep onto lawns and grassy areas and slowly take over. If you notice this weed, get your grass treated and your lawn aerated. The process will loosen up the soil and make it harder for the weed to spread!
- Clover: This is one of the most common weeds to take over lawns and grassy areas. It’s tough to remove and requires multiple weed spray treatments. This weed thrives in nitrogen-deficient soil, so one way you can prevent it from growing is by sticking to a proper watering schedule!
- Dandelions: The most popular weed by far, these pesky yellow plants may look cute, but if you turn your back on them, they’ll be everywhere. Dandelions can grow in almost any soil, so you can expect to find them anywhere. The best way to prevent further growth is to spray them early before they spread their seeds and more plants pop up!
- Dock: This weed has large crinkly leaves and purple dots, but it grows deep roots, so it takes multiple weed spray treatments to kill it completely. Dock weed grows best in wet soil but survives with little rain, so you can still expect to find it even if conditions are dry.
- Kochia: This weed eventually develops into tumbleweeds as a way to spread its seeds. It can grow very tall and emits a toxin that kills nearby plant life. So if you notice this weed in your flowerbeds or landscaping, get rid of it quickly before it kills your other plant life!
